Mexican fire opal is a unique variety of opal known for its vibrant yellow, orange, or deep red body color. Unlike traditional opals, they are highly transparent. Ranging in price from about $220 to thousands of dollars per stone, they are often faceted rather than cut only as cabochons.

- Color Source: The vivid, autumnal colors are caused by trace amounts of iron oxide within the silica structure.
- Play-of-Color: While some feature a mesmerizing flash of iridescent rainbow colors, many fire opals are valued strictly for their solid, glowing background hue.
- Hardness: Like all opals, they register a 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making them slightly softer and requiring care when set in everyday rings.
Origins & History
- Location: The vast majority of commercial and high-quality fire opals are mined in the volcanic highlands of Mexico, primarily in the state of Jalisco.
- Cultural Significance: They were utilized by ancient Aztecs and Mayans in mosaics and rituals. They called the gem quetzalitzlipyollitli, which translates to "stone of the bird of paradise".
Care & Maintenance
Because fire opals contain 3% to 10% water trapped in their structure, they are sensitive to extreme heat, sudden temperature shifts, and harsh chemicals. Always clean them using mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth rather than steam or ultrasonic cleaners.
