A ruby is a highly prized precious gemstone known for its vibrant red color, which is caused by traces of chromium. A variety of the mineral corundum, it measures a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it incredibly durable for jewelry.

• • Appearance & Rarity: The most valuable and coveted shade is "pigeon blood" (a deep, vivid blood-red). Natural, unheated rubies are rarer and can command higher prices than even diamonds of similar quality. 

• Birthstone: It is the traditional birthstone for the month of July. 
• Treatments: Because gem-quality rough stones are so rare, many rubies undergo heat treatments or fracture-filling to improve color and clarity.
