Natural Idaho Pink Star Garnet 4.31 CT

Idaho star garnets are among the rarest gems in the world, found in commercial quantities only in the Idaho Panhandle and India. Designated as Idaho’s official state gemstone, these unique crystals feature microscopic rutile (titanium oxide) inclusions that produce a glowing 4- or 6-ray star effect when cut and polished.

Appearance & Rarity
  • Color: Typically deep dark red, purple, or purplish-red. While some can appear a lighter, jammy pink under the light, the base is usually a rich plum or dark red.
  • The "Star" Effect: This phenomenon (asterism) relies on light reflecting off rutile fibers aligned within the crystal structure.
  • Ray Count: 4-ray stars are more common, but Idaho is known for producing stunning, highly coveted 6-ray stars.

Where to Dig for Them
You can dig for your own star garnets at the Emerald Creek Garnet Area, located in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests south of St. Maries.
  • How it works: Because direct stream dredging is restricted to protect water quality, the US Forest Service provides a stockpile of pre-dug, garnet-bearing gravels. Visitors use provided sluice boxes to wash the gravel and sift out the gems.
  • Permits: You must have an advanced ticket/permit, which can be secured online through Recreation.gov. Walk-ups are not accepted.
  • Season: The site typically operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

Purchasing Finished Stones
If you're looking to buy pre-cut stones or custom jewelry rather than digging, you can find authentic Idaho star garnets at local gem shops (such as Stewart's Gem Shop in Boise) or via online marketplaces like Etsy. Depending on the quality, size, and ray count, stones generally range anywhere from $40 to over $300.
