Rhodochrosite From Alma Colorado 3.79 CT
Rhodochrosite is a rare, striking manganese carbonate gem known for its vibrant bubblegum pink to deep raspberry red hues. Highly coveted by collectors for its luster and unique coloring, it is frequently fashioned into cabochons, beads, or carvings.
Key Characteristics
- Color: Ranges from delicate pastel pink to fiery "watermelon" red, often featuring striking white or gray banding (resembling "bacon" or a concentric "Inca rose").
- Hardness: Extremely soft, rating just 3.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale.
- Durability: Fragile with perfect cleavage, making it susceptible to scratches and breaking; it is rarely used in rings or bracelets unless heavily protected.
Sourcing & Varieties
- Banded (Inca Rose): Typically opaque and mined in massive quantities in Argentina(notably the Capilitas Mine). This variety is generally budget-friendly and used for decorative items.
- Crystalline (Red & Pink): Transparent gem-grade single crystals are extremely rare and highly expensive. The world's finest, fiery-red specimens originated from the famous Sweet Home Mine in Alma, Colorado, though notable specimens are also sourced from South Africa and Peru.
