Dendrite Opal From Australia 4.55 CT

Dendrite opal from Austria—commonly referred to as moss opal—is a unique, opaque variety of common opal characterized by dark, tree-like or fern-like inclusions (dendrites) caused by manganese or iron. The most well-known locality for this specific European opal is the town of Dobersberg in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria.

Key Characteristics & Uses

  • Appearance: Milky-white to creamy-brown background with striking black, gray, or dark green branching patterns.
  • Properties: It does not exhibit the iridescent "play-of-color" found in precious opals, and measures between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.
  • Metaphysical: Often utilized as a "shaman stone" or merlinite, it is believed to enhance intuition, bring emotional balance, and connect users to nature's rhythms.

Sourcing & Collecting

Because it is a common opal, Austrian moss opal is highly affordable and sought after by mineral collectors and lapidary artists. Small raw mineral specimens and polished pocket stones can typically be found for around $150 to $220, making it highly accessible.
