Ethiopian Opal from Ethiopian 1.45 CT

Ethiopian opal is a vibrant, volcanic gemstone known for its vivid, 3-dimensional "play-of-color". Discovered in the Wollo and Shewa regions, these stones are predominantly hydrophane—meaning they absorb water and can temporarily turn transparent. Because they are affordable and dynamic, they are highly sought after by jewelers and collectors alike.

Key Characteristics
  • Play-of-Color: The stones scatter light to reveal flashes of reds, blues, greens, and oranges. Some rare varieties feature a "honeycomb" web pattern.
  • Hydrophane Nature: These stones are "water-loving". When submerged, they absorb water and can become completely clear, eventually returning to their opaque or translucent state once fully dry.
  • Hardness: They rank between 5.5 and 6 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Care & Maintenance
Because of their porous, water-absorbing structure, Ethiopian opals require special care compared to other gems.
  • Avoid Chemicals: Keep them away from lotions, perfumes, soaps, and household cleaners, which can seep into the stone and permanently stain or alter the color.
  • Water Exposure: While some non-hydrophane stones handle water well, it is generally recommended to remove Ethiopian opal jewelry before swimming, bathing, or washing dishes
