Cultured freshwater pearls are real, authentic gems grown in freshwater lakes and rivers, predominantly in China. Unlike saltwater pearls, they are composed entirely of solid nacre, making them highly durable. They offer incredible value, coming in a vast array of natural colors, shapes, and sizes.

Understanding cultured freshwater pearls requires looking at their key characteristics:

  • How They Form: Cultured pearls are grown with human assistance. Farmers insert a small piece of mantle tissue (and occasionally a bead) into a mollusk. The mollusk coats this irritant in layers of nacre, forming the pearl over 2 to 7 years.
  • Colors & Shapes: While classic round white pearls are popular, they come in a stunning variety of pastel shades—including pink, peach, lavender, and metallic hues. Shapes range from perfectly round and oval to baroque (irregular) and unique forms like "potato" or "rice".
  • Pricing: Because mollusks can produce multiple pearls at once, cultured freshwater pearls are significantly more abundant and affordable than saltwater alternatives (like Akoya, Tahitian, or South Sea pearls). High-quality strands and jewelry items are readily available, often spanning a broad price range depending on quality.
  • Quality Grading: The most valuable freshwater pearls are perfectly round, free of surface blemishes, and exhibit a high "luster" (a bright, mirror-like reflection).
