Violet blue tanzanite is the most coveted and valuable color variety of the mineral zoisite, prized for its trichroism—the ability to simultaneously display vivid blue, deep violet, and purple hues. Mined exclusively in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania, its unique color is caused by trace amounts of vanadium. 

Key Characteristics

• • Color Composition: Top-tier tanzanites feature a ratio of about 70–75% intense royal blue to 25–30% rich violet. As the gem shifts in the light, flashes of deep purple or burgundy may appear. 

• Origin: This gemstone is found in a single 4.3-mile strip near the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, making it significantly rarer than diamonds. 
• Treatments: Nearly all tanzanite on the market is heat-treated to eliminate naturally occurring brownish or yellowish tones, stabilizing its iconic blue-violet color. 

• Cut & Carat: Deeper cuts showcase pleochroism best, but because the raw crystal faces have strong directional color, lapidarists often compromise on carat weight to preserve the highest saturation of blue. 
• Clarity: Unlike emeralds, tanzanites should ideally be eye-clean (free of inclusions visible to the naked eye). 
• Scarcity: Geological estimates suggest the Merelani mines could be depleted within the next few decades, causing terminal scarcity that steadily drives collector value.
