Blue Zircon From Cambodia .88 CT 5.9 x 3.8mm Heated.
Cambodian blue zircon is the most brilliant and fiery blue gemstone available, boasting a higher refractive index than diamond. Mined almost exclusively in the Ratanakiri province, these natural beauties are unearthed as dull, brownish-red crystals that achieve their signature sky-to-ocean blue hues through traditional heat treatment.
Key Characteristics
- Brilliance & Fire: Zircon has intense dispersion (fire). When faceted, it shows prominent facet doubling (birefringence), giving it a unique, shimmering depth.
- Origin: The Bo Kheo mines in Ratanakiri are the historic and primary source of the world's most prized blue zircon.
- Durability: With a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, it is suitable for everyday wear if cared for correctly, though it should be protected from harsh impact.
Treatment & Colors
No naturally blue zircon is found in the ground. The famous blue color is born from traditional artisanal heat treatment—often performed locally using wood charcoal and blowers—which converts the rough, opaque brown stones into vibrant blues. It is important to know that this heat treatment is permanent.
