Nat Zircon Cambodia 1.23 CT

Cambodia is one of the world's primary sources of natural, earth-mined zircon, heavily prized in the jewelry industry for its exceptional brilliance and fire (which even rivals a diamond). The vast majority of these stones are mined in the Ratanakiri province in northeastern Cambodia.

Key Facts About Cambodian Zircon

  • The "Cambodian Blue": While zircons naturally occur in earthy tones (like brown or orange), the famous vivid blue Cambodian zircon is created by heating the rough stones in an oxygen-free, charcoal environment.
  • Not Cubic Zirconia: Zircon is a completely natural, ancient mineral (zirconium silicate), whereas cubic zirconia is a synthetic, man-made lab product.
  • High Refraction: Zircon has a uniquely high refractive index and double refraction, meaning it throws spectacular flashes of colored light when cut and faceted.
  • Durability: It rates at a 6.5 - 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. While it is suitable for daily wear rings and necklaces, care should be taken to avoid rough knocks or deep scratches.
