Prehnite Gemstone

Prehnite is an attractive, primarily translucent calcium-aluminum silicate gemstone known for its soft apple-green to yellow-green hues. It is highly prized by collectors and jewelry makers for its unique, velvety luster and calming appearance.

Key Characteristics
  • Colors: Typically pale green, yellowish-green, or yellow. Rare colorless, white, or orange specimens also exist.
  • Hardness: 6.0 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, making it durable enough for everyday jewelry like earrings or necklaces, though protective settings are recommended for rings.
  • Luster: Vitreous (glassy) to pearly.
  • Clarity: Usually translucent and cloudy, though completely transparent material is extremely rare.
Origins and History
  • Prehnite has the unique distinction of being the first gemstone ever named after a person. It was named in 1788 in honor of Dutch mineralogist Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, who discovered it at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.
  • Where it's found: Major deposits are now located in Australia, South Africa, China, and the United States.
Gemstone Cuts and Pricing
Because it frequently forms in grape-like clusters, prehnite is most commonly cut into cabochons(smooth, rounded stones) or used for intricate carvings. Transparent, faceted prehnite is rare and sought after by gemstone enthusiasts. It is generally an affordable, budget-friendly stone, though prices scale upward for clean, well-cut faceted gems.
Metaphysical Properties
In holistic and alternative crystal healing, prehnite is revered as a "stone of dreaming" and a "stone of prophecy". It is widely used in meditation to:
  • Promote inner peace, deep calm, and emotional balance.
  • Enhance intuition, lucid dreaming, and spiritual communication.
