Natural red Italian coral (Corallium rubrum) is a highly prized organic gemstone harvested in the Mediterranean Sea. Known for its waxy luster, density, and deep, uniform red or reddish-orange color, it is deeply valued in traditional Italian jewelry, amulets, and Vedic astrology. 

Key Characteristics

• Origin: Harvested exclusively from the Mediterranean, primarily around Italy and Sardinia.
• Hardness: Rates about 3.5 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft and prone to scratching compared to traditional stones.
• Color Grades: Ranges from pale pink ("Angel Skin") to deep, intense red, with the most expensive, prized shade being dark "oxblood".

Real vs. Fake Identification

Due to strict fishing regulations and environmental protections, authentic natural red Italian coral is highly regulated and expensive. Many cheap "coral" items on the market are dyed bamboo, bone, or plastic. 

• Acetone Test: Rubbing the surface gently with a cotton swab dipped in acetone will pick up dye if it is a fake.
• Surface Inspection: Natural coral often features microscopic pits and natural growth streaks, not a perfectly smooth, glassy finish.
