Orange Kyanite
Orange Kyanite From Loliondo Tanzania
Orange Kyanite from Loliondo, Tanzania, is an extremely rare and highly sought-after gemstone discovered in 2007. Mined primarily at Sangulungulu Hill (Nani Hill), it is prized for its rich, vibrant orange color—believed to be caused by manganese traces.
Key Characteristics & Geological Traits
- Color: Pure, intense orange to brownish-orange.
- Crystal Habit: Often found in uncommonly thick crystals, frequently forming "V-shaped" twins.
- Physical Properties: Like all kyanite, it has an extreme directional hardness, ranging from 4 to 5 along its length and 6.5 to 7.5 across the crystal axis.
- Treatments: Generally completely natural and untreated.
The Loliondo Deposit
The Loliondo region is located in the Ngorongoro District of the Arusha Region. The area is geographically famous not only for its rare orange kyanite but also for yielding some of the world's finest spessartine garnets.
Market & Availability
Because it is localized to a single deposit, gem-quality facet rough and polished crystals are considered true collector's items. Small sizes are most common, with typical faceted or rough specimens often weighing under 3 carats.
- Rough specimens for wire-wrapping or display.
- Faceted or cabochon stones for jewelry making.
