Hourglass Selenite From Salt Plains Oklahoma

Hourglass selenite is a rare, chocolate-brown variety of gypsum crystal containing an internal "hourglass" inclusion of trapped sand and clay. Famous for being the official state crystal of Oklahoma, it is world-renowned for being uniquely found at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in Jet, Oklahoma.

Location & Visiting Details

  • Where: Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge (66003 Garvin Road, Cherokee, OK 73728).
  • Season: The crystal digging area is open annually from April 1 through October 15.
  • Hours: Sunrise to sunset.
  • Cost: Free! There is no entry fee or permit required for the digging area.

How to Dig

  1. Dig the hole: Use a shovel to dig a hole about 1.5 to 2 feet deep where crystals are known to form.
  2. Add water: Pour water into the hole or onto the wet mud to wash the dirt away.
  3. Sift and collect: Gently reach into the mud and sand with your hands to carefully pull out the fragile crystals.

Rules & Regulations

  • Bag Limit: Each person is allowed to collect up to 10 pounds of crystals plus 1 large cluster per day.
  • Personal Use Only: Crystals found at the refuge are for personal collection and cannot be sold.
  • Leave the Holes: You are actually encouraged not to fill your holes when you are done. The salty groundwater fills them, creating vital watering and sheltering spots for migratory birds and small wildlife.

What to Bring

  • Shovel & Bucket: For digging and carrying your crystals.
  • Water: Lots of drinking water and extra water to help wash the sand off the crystals.
  • Sun Protection: The salt flats reflect the sun and offer absolutely zero shade, so hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses are highly recommended.
