Natural Hessonite Garnet, often called "cinnamon stone," is a distinct, honey-yellow to deep brownish-red variety of grossular garnet Ca₃Al₂(SiO₄)₃. It is famously prized for its "roiled" or "heat wave" internal effect caused by microscopic inclusions, which give it a unique swirling, fluid appearance.

Key Characteristics

  • Color: Ranges from honey-yellow and orange to rich cinnamon, reddish-brown, and brownish-red.
  • Hardness: Measures 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it generally suitable for rings and other jewelry.
  • Origin: The highest quality natural Hessonite is primarily mined in Sri Lanka, though it is also found in India, Madagascar, Brazil, and Tanzania.
  • Inclusions: Often contains "heat wave" effects and small refractive index differences (known as a roiled, turbulent, or "honeycomb" inner appearance) rather than being perfectly clear
