Kunzite From Paprok Mine Afghanistan
Kunzite is a delicate pink to violet gemstone that is the most famous variety of the mineral spodumene. Colored by trace amounts of manganese, it was first discovered in 1902 in San Diego County, California, and is named in honor of the pioneering American gemologist George F. Kunz.
Key Characteristics and Uses
-
- Color and Pleochroism: Kunzite displays a unique optical property called pleochroism, meaning the color appears to shift and change intensity depending on the angle from which it is viewed.
- Durability: It registers between 6.5 and 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, but it has two perfect cleavage directions, making it fragile and challenging for jewelers to cut without splitting.
- Fading: Kunzite is sensitive to heat and strong light. Because direct or intense sun exposure can cause its color to fade over time, it is traditionally known as an "evening stone".
Origins and Sourcing
While originally discovered in California, the most significant commercial deposits today are mined in Afghanistan, Brazil, and Madagascar. Because the pink coloration requires a thicker stone to truly stand out, kunzite is usually cut into relatively large carat sizes, making it a popular option for statement rings, earrings, and pendants.
Symbolism and Lore
In the world of crystal healing and holistic practices, kunzite is widely cherished for its connection to the heart chakra. It is believed to represent "divine love," acting as a tool for emotional healing, dispelling anxiety, and promoting inner peace, kindness, and self-worth.
