Angustiden Tooth From predecessor of Megalodon South Caroline United States

An Otodus angustidens (often called Angustiden) tooth is a fossilized remain from a prehistoric megatooth shark that lived 33 to 22 million years ago. It is recognized by a wide, triangular blade, sharp serrations, and distinct small side cusplets ("ears").

Key traits and information include:

  • Size: These teeth can reach up to 5 inches in length, suggesting the shark grew up to 36 feet long.
  • Evolutionary Context: This shark is an ancient ancestor to the legendary Megalodon. Unlike the Megalodon, Angustiden teeth retain small side cusplets at the base of the crown.
  • Origin & Identification: Many high-quality specimens are found in South Carolina (such as the Chandler Bridge and Ashley River formations). When identifying authentic fossils, distinguishing them from similar species can be challenging, and jaw position can drastically affect a tooth's width.
