Pink Tanzanite

Pink tanzanite is an incredibly rare color variation of the mineral zoisite, found only in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. Because 1 in 25,000 stones emerge pink naturally, these unheated beauties are strictly for collectors and are among the most expensive gems per carat in the world.
Why It's So Rare
While standard tanzanite is heated to produce its iconic blue-violet hue, pink tanzanite retains its natural coloration caused by trace elements of manganese. In fact, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) prefers to classify these non-blue varieties simply as "fancy zoisite" rather than tanzanite.

Important Considerations for Buyers
- Durability: Tanzanite has a rating of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. It is relatively soft and has perfect cleavage, making it susceptible to scratches and easily chipped if worn in an everyday ring.
- Treatments: You should always ask for certification. Heating a pink zoisite can permanently destroy the pink color, washing it out to a very pale blue.
- Pricing & Sourcing: Prices can vary wildly. Small crystal specimens can be found for a few hundred dollars, while certified, investment-grade cut gems over 1-2 carats can command five-figure prices per carat.
