Aquamarine is a stunning, pale-blue to deep-greenish-blue gemstone from the beryl family, famous for its ocean-like hues and vitreous luster. Rated 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, it is highly durable for daily jewelry wear. As the official March Birthstone, it is prized for symbolizing clarity and calm.

Key Characteristics & Value

    • Color: Hues range from light pastel blue to deep sky blue. The most sought-after and expensive aquamarines are rich, untreated blue, historically referred to as "Santa Maria".

  • Cut & Clarity: Aquamarine crystals are often remarkably free of inclusions, making them ideal for emerald, oval, and pear cuts.
  • Price: Prices vary widely based on saturation, ranging from around $30 per carat for lighter, standard stones up to thousands of dollars per carat for saturated, investment-grade gems.

Where It's Mined
The vast majority of the world's gem-quality aquamarine is mined in Brazil, particularly in the Minas Gerais region. However, significant deposits are also actively worked in Pakistan, Mozambique, Nigeria, Madagascar, and Tanzania.
Care Tips
While it is highly durable, aquamarine can be scratched by harder stones like diamonds and corundum. It is best cleaned at home using warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid steam cleaning or ultrasonic cleaners to prevent thermal shock to the crystal.
